Best known today as the author of Utopia, a fictional portrait of an ideal society, Thomas More (1478-1535) was a major figure of the Tudor era. He wrote numerous political and religious works, was a major proponent of Christian Humanism, and corresponded with some of the leading figures of his day. He was executed for his refusal to recognize Henry VIII as England's spiritual leader and was canonized for his martyrdom.
